Bouncing Back from Rejection During the Job Search

Updated: May 3, 2020

Rejection can be a massive blow to your self-esteem but remember: diversity causes some people to break and others to break barriers. You may not have control over the hiring process but you do have complete control over how you handle the rejection you may face during your job search. It's essential to stay focused and keep a few things in mind:

It may be a blessing in disguise. You've probably heard this before, but I'm going to say it again - if it's meant to be, it will be. Re-evaluate why you wanted the job in the first place. Does it truly align with your personal and professional goals? Is it within the salary range that you desire? Are you settling because of the rejection you've faced? Any open opportunity after being shot down repeatedly may seem a gift from the heavens; be open, but not desperate. You don't want to end up in an unfulfilling job instead of on your way to a career you can be proud of.

Be so good they can't ignore you. Companies have to fill roles according to their needs and a harsh reality that most job seekers fail to accept is that you may not be a good fit. Identify your personal skills gap and take action to close the gap. The job market was extremely competitive before COVID-19 and with over 23 million current jobless claims reported in the last five weeks, it's going to be harder than before. Companies will be looking for the best and brightest to help rebuild what was lost.

Become self-aware, take advantage of online courses and certifications, become a master of your craft, and take yourself (and your career) seriously and soon companies won't be able to pass you up.

Bounce back… quickly. Dwelling on a rejection won't get you any closer to your dream role. It's important to acknowledge and feel the pain of rejection, but you have to move forward. Sometimes the decision to remove you from the process has nothing to do with you. Just because they moved forward with another candidate doesn't mean that it was personal or that you aren’t qualified. Be realistic about your strengths and downfalls without beating yourself up.

Remember your goals and keep your eyes on the prize. Find ways to relieve the stress of the job hunt (i.e, exercising, meditation, etc.) and don't settle for less than you deserve. It can be overwhelming but remember: you can only control yourself and your reaction.
