Why You Aren't Making It Past The Job Interview

I'm not sure about anyone else but when I think of interviewing, I immediately think of Dale and Brennan from Stepbrothers. While this is probably one of the greatest cinematic moments in history, I strongly recommend using their strategy. Keep reading to find out Your HR Homegirl's recommendations and get to the bottom of why you aren't making it past the interview.

You < Your Resume

A lot of focus is put into resume-building (which is very important) but if you can't articulate the skills highlighted on your resume, they'll think you're a fraud. If your resume says that you were a regional manager with a team of 20+ but you can't describe how you developed and executed various strategies mentioned in your resume, it's a red flag.

Speaking a Different Language

Your interviewer is not a robot (unless it's one of those terrible AI systems.) Just like you want to feel valued, important and smart, so do they! Read their facial expressions and pay attention to their body language. Ask questions and pay attention to when their face lights up during certain questions. Find out what's really important to them and sell yourself.

Your attire

Research the company culture on LinkedIn, career site or other social media pages to find out what level of business attire is best. For some companies, jeans and a polo shirt during the interview phase is fine and for some, you won't get very far. Be cautious and when in doubt, keep it simple. Business professional is always a safe choice.

You didn't sell it

You don't want to seem too aggressive but you definitely need to sell yourself. This is the first time they're meeting and they have most likely met with hundreds of candidates before you. Give them a reason to remember you. Research the interviewers ahead of time, make a connection and leave an impression.
